I have to go to a larger city in order to find them. Sometimes I wish I could grow my own fig tree in my backyard but the weather here wouldn't like it. :( Beautiful photo. Even supermarkets, which are vilified by many chefs and foodies, provide an amazing choice (though they may not treat their producers well enough). I saw a new kind of papaya tonight in Tesco - who'd've thought it? PS - the tart looks nice, but I think I'd try it with another fruit ;-) I agree – I think too much is said about the bad eating habits in this country, and not enough about the amazing diversity of produce available. Once a fig tree is established, it can crop quite heavily (pick off any half-grown figs at the end of autumn, leaving just the little tiny fig buds to grow next year as UK summers aren't hot enough to mature two harvests). You will often see fig trees in gardens and it's obvious that no-one bothers to pick them, so knock on the door and offer to make them this tart or some fig jam or fig mustard (recipe in "Demonstrator Delights" recipe book) in exchange for being able to harvest their figs. You'll almost always get a yes!!! Hi Maddy, figs grow really well here in the UK and our young fig tree had 15 figs this summer – absolutely delicious. It's going to be a while before our own fig tree bears fruit but there are plenty of others to buy. In the meantime, we might practise with some other fruits. Love the recipe, love figs. The great thing about Australia is that we grow almost every type of fruit and veg imaginable so don't HAVE to import - but we still do :( Thanks.
